Sarah aspires to work for newspapers, magazines, nonprofits and businesses addressing social issues. Her dream job is to work for a humanitarian nonprofit. She would be writing blogs, media pitches and articles about the organization's work that would be published in news media, in order to pursue her two passions: serving others and writing their stories.

Social Change in the Field of Journalism

This page's initial purpose was to serve as a portfolio, but it has also become a place to spread positive journalism. This is something that is highly needed in today's society, especially if we journalists are going to regain and retain a good, unbiased and trustworthy reputation.

Her mission is to help journalists aid people in need, especially refugees. There is an abundance of bad news being reported and not enough being done to help those that the stories are about.

Sarah believes journalists have a duty and obligation to do more than just report bad news. As the first witnesses of an event, they also have the responsibility to change it - to make a difference.

Sarah received the initial inspiration for this mission when she joined the Next Generation Service Corps at ASU, a civilian program within the Public Service Academy that focuses on certifying students in Cross Sector Collaboration. This is the study of bringing nonprofits, governments, and businesses together to better address social change. She was further inspired to focus on refugees in the Middle East when she become close friends with an incredible young family from Syria on her religious mission in Logan, Utah.

She plans to achieve her mission by creating a nonprofit called Journalists Initiative for Humanitarian Aid, or JIHAD. This word has been commonly known for being in association with terrorist groups, but originally, its definition is as follows:

  • Jihad is an Arabic word which literally means "effort", "striving", or "struggling", especially with a praiseworthy aim.

  • a struggle or fight against the enemies of Islam.

  • the spiritual struggle within oneself against sin.

JIHAD will work to help those struggling as refugees to strive towards achieving financial independence, freedom, and safety. They will recruit working journalists, especially foreign and war correspondents, as members and work together in their free time to give food, water, shelter, clothing, medical aid, education, job skills, and other necessary tools to those in need in the Middle East and around the world.

It's her goal; not just a professional one, but a personal one. A goal she wants to fulfill during her entire career and life. Seeing others happy and having their needs met because of something she was able to do or provide is what motivates Sarah to succeed in all of her work. She hopes you enjoy this page, and don't hesitate to get in touch with her if you like what you read.
